Motoring Tips for the Royal AA
The essential checks:
Battery:
It’s good practice to have the
battery check twice a year. Batteries have a life of around five years. Most
common problems are with terminals & clamps connections.
-
At every service check
that the terminals have been cleaned & protected from corrosion by a layer of
petroleum jelly or grease. Clamps & connection must be secure.
-
If you seldom make a
long journey, a fortnightly overnight charge prolongs battery life
-
Modern
maintenance-free batteries need no top-up.
Tyres: Check
for adequate depth, pressure and general condition, and don’t forget the
spare wheel.
-
Know the correct pressure
of the tyres.
-
Krebs impact can damage
sidewalls and, possibly wheel rims. Both can result in slow leaks.
-
When checking the depth,
look for uneven tyre wear-the wheels may be misaligned.
Lights: Make
sure all lights are working properly: headlights, indicators and hazard warning
lights.
Oil & Filter
Water
- Check the coolant levels
regularly.
- Top up when necessary, but
only when the engine is cold.
Wipers
All these checks are carried out free to new members.
Surviving a breakdown
Should you find yourself in a
breakdown situation, AA offers some timely advice
-
Pull off the road as soon as you
think there may be a problem with your car. Limping along could make the
problem worse and cause further damage to your car.
-
Try to position your vehicle as
far over to the right-hand-side of the road or hard shoulder as possible.
-
Anyone getting out of the
vehicle should exit by the right-hand-side passenger door.
-
If you break down in darkness,
don’t abandon the car and go off in search of help. If possible motorists
should remain with their vehicle and call for assistance using their mobile
phone, thereby ensuring their personal safety and protection, and that of
their passengers.
-
Put your hazard warning lights
on, in the dark or in poor visibility conditions, leave your sidelights on
as well.
-
While waiting for assistance, it
is advisable to keep the doors locked, and when help arrives ask for
identification.
-
Our average calls out time
of 30minutes.
